The Moon: Upright Meaning

The Moon tarot card is a deeply evocative image, featuring a dog and a wolf howling at the full moon, symbolizing the tension between our wild and domesticated selves. A crayfish emerges from a pond, representing thoughts arising from the subconscious. Moons are known for being shrouded in mystery and shadows, indicating that all is not as it seems. This represents our willingness to accept these illusions as truth. We must come to realize that there are two sides to the Moon (light & dark) so that we can understand its full meaning: The Moon illuminates hidden truths and brings subconscious thoughts to the surface. This is a call for you to explore and accept the shadowy aspects of your situation.

The Moon card signifies the exploration of your shadow self and urges you not to fear it. It represents the unknown, where not everything is (not yet) clear. Due to this, you may feel pulled in directions that only your subconscious can comprehend. Understanding these hidden aspects of yourself can offer profound insight and clarity as your shadow emerges into consciousness. This card is more about accepting these parts of yourself, rather than outright rejection or continued repression.

In the Fool's Journey, the Moon marks a time of vulnerability to illusions and fantasies. After encountering the Star (17) and experiencing renewal, The Fool must also make amends with his shadow self (The Moon) to continue his healing and growth.

The Moon is associated with the number 18. The number 1 represents new beginnings and individuality (The Magician Card), while the number 8 symbolizes power and infinity (The Strength Card). This combination highlights how inner strength, resilience, and originality can help you reach your highest level.

Love/Relationships

The Moon love meaning suggests that something is not what it seems. There could be misunderstandings or suppressed emotions that need to be addressed. Be sure to have deep, honest and open conversations with your partner to clear any confusion and strengthen your bond.

If you are single, The Moon advises you to trust your intuition and be aware of any red flags that may arise in new relationships. Listen to your gut feelings about your relationship. If something feels off, it’s essential to address it head-on to avoid future issues.

Money/Career

When it comes to money and career, The Moon indicates that objectives in the workplace might be clouded. There may be uncertainties or hidden aspects in your professional life that need attention. This card suggests that thorough communication and careful reading of all correspondences are crucial to avoid misunderstandings and potential pitfalls. It’s a time to be cautious and ensure that you have all the information before making any significant decisions. Action items: double-check all communications, clarify your objectives, and trust your instincts when navigating workplace dynamics.

Spiritual/Self

At its core, The Moon is about facing your shadow self and figuring out how to integrate all aspects of yourself to achieve spiritual growth. Confronting your shadow self could involve facing your deeping insecurities or accepting so-called “negative” personality traits. This is extremely difficult for most people to do, but the work must be done if you are to expand the limits of your mind.

This is a great time for introspection. Practical things you can do involve meditation, keeping a dream journal, and getting an outside perspective on your situation. Choose a practice that you are comfortable with, yet challenges you enough to see past the illusions of The Moon.

Now is a time to be cautious and ensure that you have all the information before making any significant decisions.

Astrology

The Moon is closely linked with the water signs of Cancer and Pisces. Pisces embodies intuition, dreams, and the subconscious mind, mirroring The Moon’s themes. There is also a crayfish emerging from water, which many people associate with the sign of Cancer. Cancer is known to be nurturing, sensitive, inuitive, and deeply caring.

These connections emphasize the importance of navigating emotional landscapes with sensitivity and awareness. Explore your dreams, emotions, and intuitive insights, but also understand them as an extension of yourself.

The Moon also has strong symbology in Astrology. Many people follow the phases of the moon and take note of their astrological significance. In case you’d like to incorporate the astrological meanings of the moon in your Tarot practice, I’ve provided high level meanings below for you to reference:

Note: It's important to recognize that not everyone incorporates astrology into their Tarot readings. The extent to which astrological references are used can vary greatly among readers. Each reader has a unique approach; some may draw heavily on astrological archetypes, while others might not use them at all. This information is meant to offer an additional perspective that could be helpful in your interpretations by highlighting parallels between Tarot and Astrology.

Although some argue that astrology wasn't originally part of Tarot, more modern interpretations like the Rider Waite Smith and Thoth decks may have integrated astrological concepts to align with their modern time mystical beliefs. Many contemporary decks made in this current decade also feature astrological references. Ultimately, every individual develops their own unique relationship with both Tarot and Astrology.
