Death: Upright Meaning

The illustration features Death as a skeletal figure clad in invincible armor, riding a white horse. Beneath him, a king lies dead, and a bishop pleads, signifying that no one is immune to the transformative power of Death. In the distance, the sun rises between two towers, symbolizing hope and new beginnings. This card represents profound change and transformation, urging you to let go of the past to make way for a brighter future.

The Death card in the Tarot deck is frequently misunderstood, often causing apprehension because of its name and imagery. In reality, Death is one of the most optimistic cards in the deck. I like to refer to this card as the quintessential symbol of "transformation" – a potent indicator of profound change and a promising future.

In The Fool's Journey, he faces Death and experiences a profound ego death where his previous identity dissolves. This pivotal moment wipes his slate clean, clearing away old patterns and beliefs. As a result, The Fool steps into a new phase of existence, making room for fresh opportunities to emerge. This transformative phase signifies the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, filled with potential for growth and renewal.

The Death card is associated with the number 13, which symbolizes prosperity, transformation, and rebirth. The number 13 combines the energies of 1 (new beginnings) and 3 (creativity and growth), highlighting the importance of staying positive amidst adversity. This card's numerology reinforces the theme of significant change and the promise of new opportunities arising from the end of old cycles.

Love/Relationships

The Death card love meaning signifies the necessity of change for growth. It might indicate that an aspect of your relationship needs to end for it to evolve, whether it’s an unhealthy dynamic or a limiting belief. If you're single, it suggests that you may need to let go of past attitudes or behaviors to attract a new, healthier relationship. Perhaps it’s a sign to communicate openly with your partner about necessary changes in order for old patterns to be released.

Being part of The Major Arcana, the Death card is a powerful symbol of change and typically represents a significant event. Take a hard look at your relationships. What isn’t working? Is it time to let something (or someone) go?

Money/Career

The Death card in the context of money and career is a strong indicator of transformation. It suggests that an end is necessary to pave the way for new beginnings. This could mean changing jobs, adopting new work habits, or even restructuring your career goals. Stay adaptable and open to new opportunities. Letting go of outdated practices or unproductive team dynamics can lead to more prosperous and fulfilling professional paths.

Spiritual/Self

The Death card represents a profound transformation and rebirth. It's a signal to release old beliefs and energies that no longer serve your highest self. Our outdated ways often hold us back from our own happiness and growth, yet we are usually unaware of this. Therefore, this card calls for deep introspection and a willingness to undergo a spiritual rebirth, akin to shedding an old skin. Ask yourself, what can you let go of? When was the last time you questioned the very ‘why’ of your own actions? Undergoing this period of profound renewal will lead to a more aligned and authentic self, as your new self flourishes while the old fades away. This journey can deepen your understanding of your true nature and purpose.

An end is necessary to pave the way for new beginnings.

Astrology

The Death card is associated with Scorpio, a sign known for its themes of transformation, power, rebirth, and renewal. Scorpio's energy emphasizes the depth and intensity of the changes signified by the Death card.

There is a fun story about Scorpio in Astrology circles where their journey unfolds in three distinct phases, each representing a significant stage of transformation and transcendence. (Note: I honestly could not find the true origin of this story, but I’ve read it in various texts and forums. If anyone knows the true origin, let me know! But for now, I thought this would be a fun story to share since it draws so many similarities to The Death Card)

  • In the first phase, Scorpio begins as a scorpion, symbolizing its initial, Earthly form known for their ability to survive harsh conditions and for their powerful sting.

  • In the second phase, it evolves into an eagle, reflecting a higher level of evolution, power, and awareness.

  • Finally, in the third phase, Scorpio transforms into a mythical phoenix, epitomizing spiritual rebirth and profound renewal. The Phoenix aspect highlights Scorpio's profound capacity for healing and reinvention, illustrating the sign's journey through life's cycles of death and rebirth.

Just as Scorpio navigates the depths of transformation with resilience and insight, the Death card encourages you to embrace change with a fearless heart. This astrological connection underscores the importance of inner strength and the potential for profound personal evolution.

Note: It's important to recognize that not everyone incorporates astrology into their Tarot readings. The extent to which astrological references are used can vary greatly among readers. Each reader has a unique approach; some may draw heavily on astrological archetypes, while others might not use them at all. This information is meant to offer an additional perspective that could be helpful in your interpretations by highlighting parallels between Tarot and Astrology.

Although some argue that astrology wasn't originally part of Tarot, more modern interpretations like the Rider Waite Smith and Thoth decks may have integrated astrological concepts to align with their modern time mystical beliefs. Many contemporary decks made in this current decade also feature astrological references. Ultimately, every individual develops their own unique relationship with both Tarot and Astrology.

Reversed Meaning

When the Death card appears reversed, it indicates resistance to change and a clinging to the past. This resistance can hinder growth and keep you stuck in unproductive patterns. It’s a reminder that embracing change, however difficult, is essential for progress. The reversed Death card advises you to confront your fears and let go of what no longer serves you. By doing so, you create space for new opportunities and personal growth. Take small, manageable steps towards change and trust the process.
